MSC Cruises has officially placed an order for two additional ships, both powered by LNG, from Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyards. These ships, currently mentioned as World Class 3 and 4, are expected to be delivered in 2026 and 2027.Notably, the new World Class vessels will be capable of utilizing alternative fuels like bio and synthetic methane, as well as green methanol.
They will also be equipped with shore power plug-in connectivity to minimize carbon emissions when in port, along with other energy-efficient features to further reduce environmental impact. Pier Francesco Vago, executive chairman at MSC Cruises, expressed pride in the ongoing partnership with Chantiers de l’Atlantique, highlighting their collaboration in constructing 18 ships, with the 19th currently under construction.
Vago emphasized the innovative nature of the World Class ships, stating that they are at the forefront of shipbuilding advancements. He also emphasized MSC Cruises’ commitment to investing in and exploring future environmental technologies as part of their decarbonization journey, with the goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Laurent Castaing expressed his appreciation to MSC Cruises for their cooperation during this crucial period. In addition to their groundbreaking order, MSC Cruises showcased a steadfast dedication to minimizing the ecological footprint of their ships. Consequently, the company made the decision to bear the high costs necessary to significantly enhance the energy-saving capabilities of their cutting-edge vessels. As per the IMO’s EEDI index, these innovative ships will emit 50% less CO2, further highlighting the remarkable engineering prowess of everyone involved in their creation.
