Infrastructure expansion is on the horizon for the Canary Islands in the form of three new cruise terminals being constructed in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. Under the guidance of Global Ports Canary Islands, this 40 million Euro investment is geared toward enhancing the cruises industry’s financial influence on the area. These islands are enthralling cruise destinations admired by passengers across the globe, offering vacationers sunny and mild winter conditions yet also maintaining their reputation as prime spots visited by European tourists throughout the year.
Global Ports Canary Islands, a joint venture between Global Ports Holding Plc. and Sepcan S.L, is set to commence the development of various cruise terminals in the Canary Islands tomorrow. The construction project will be carried out across three islands, namely Las Palmas, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura.
The primary focus of the undertaking will be the construction of a state-of-the-art terminal at the Santa Catalina Pier in Las Palmas de Gran Canarias, which happens to be one of Spain’s busiest cruise ports. Spanning across two floors, the new terminal will encompass an impressive area of over 14,000 m2.
The upcoming terminal in Las Palmas will serve as a hub for both port visits and ships making the Canary Islands their homeport. Additionally, it will offer various shopping and dining options.
In Lanzarote, the plan is to build two separate cruise terminals in different areas of Arrecife. These terminals will have the capacity to accommodate multiple ships simultaneously. The Naos terminal will be a single-story structure spanning 1,106 m2 and will cater to both transit and homeport operations.
In contrast, the Mármoles terminal will be a state-of-the-art modular facility covering 556m2 and capable of accommodating three cruise ships. It will also include a satellite cruise terminal of 426 m2, providing additional services to guests and crew members.
Meanwhile, construction of a new cruise terminal at the Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura will start tomorrow (on November 6). Conveniently located a short distance from the city center, this terminal will feature a modern modular design spanning 924 m2. It will also offer amenities and restaurants for visiting cruise passengers.
Economic booster for Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are a highly sought-after European cruise destination, attracting a consistent flow of cruise ships throughout the year.
Within the archipelago, there are multiple ports capable of accommodating cruise ships, such as El Hierro Island, Los Cristianos in Tenerife, San Sebastian in Gomera, Santa Cruz in La Palma, and Santa Cruz in Tenerife. This expansion, representing an investment of over 40 million Euros, will greatly stimulate economic activity.
