Carnival is testing reusable liquor bottles

On Carnival Horizon, Celebration, or Sunrise, you can now participate in sustainability efforts firsthand with ecoTote’s reusable liquor bottles. These bottles will be used to serve Bacardi rum, which is a popular drink on cruise ships. The unique EcoSPIRITS reusable glass packaging will be tested for three months in select bars on the three ships. The design is patent-pending and specifically created for maritime use, with red and silver Bacardi-branded SmartPours

How it works?

Once emptied, the dispenser will be cleaned and refilled for further use. This small change can eliminate up to 95% of single-use packaging on cruises. Each dispenser replaces four Bacardi Superior Rum bottles and can be reused up to 100 times, creating a closed-loop packaging method that promotes material reuse instead of disposal.

By teaming up with ecoSPIRITS and Bacardi, Carnival Cruise Line is making a move that could significantly reduce the amount of recyclables they produce. To put this into perspective, Carnival processed more than 11 million pounds of recyclables in 2022 alone. Furthermore, the partnership has resulted in an agreement to fund the removal of over two pounds of man-made waste from endangered marine environments for every ecoTote delivered during the pilot. Zachary Sulkes, Senior Director of Beverage Operations for Carnival, praised the initiative, stating that it is a great example of thinking outside the box to further the company’s sustainability goals.

Additionally, Carnival makes an effort to recycle glass items that are meant for one-time use. Recycling centers are available on every ship in their fleet, where the crew members sort out recyclable materials like paper, plastic, and glass. Furthermore, Carnival introduced “food digesters” on all of their ships in 2022.
