When Sun Princess sets sail in the coming year (2024) , it will take its place as the largest ship ever constructed by Princess Cruises. With a capacity of 4,300 passengers, it will comfortably accommodate 800 more guests than the previous Royal Class vessel.
The ship introduces a completely new category known as Sphere Class, distinguished by its remarkable Sphere centerpiece. This architectural marvel allows an abundance of natural light to permeate the ship, offering passengers breathtaking views of the sea. Sun Princess will become the 16th addition to the esteemed Princess fleet, paying homage to its rich history by becoming the third vessel to bear this illustrious name.
The first Sun Princess, famously known as the “Love Boat” from the iconic 1970s TV series, embarked on its maiden voyage in 1974. The second Sun Princess was launched in 1995 and, at the time, was considered one of the world’s largest cruise ships, capable of accommodating 2,000 passengers.
Increasing space and adding some new features to Sun Princess
The initial observation that will catch your eye is the unique design element that will make this class even more special – a glass sphere consisting of nine decks that encircles the center of the ship, bathing the public areas on decks 6-9 in natural light.
The Piazza, a three-level main atrium found on all Princess ships, is considered the ship’s “iconic center”. It is surrounded by the most beloved bars and restaurants of the cruise line and offers live music throughout the entire day and night.
However, due to its popularity, it can become crowded, especially on days when the ship is at sea.
On Sun Princess, the size of the Piazza has been significantly expanded. It now features grand, sweeping staircases, a three-story LED screen that serves as a backdrop for performances, and a central area filled with chairs and tables. The restaurants and bars are located behind this central space.
Staying true to the principle of enhancing everything that makes Princess great, the beloved Alfredo’s restaurant now includes an outdoor section and a traditional wood-fired pizza oven.
Similarly, The Crown Grill, the renowned steakhouse of the cruise line, has also been enlarged.
360, the recently launched dining experience, is surpassed by an even higher concept that we will not disclose at this time.
The Dome, inspired by the terraces of Santorini, is a new and iconic feature of Sun Princess. This multi-level, covered enclosure is truly one-of-a-kind. During the day, it serves as a versatile space for relaxation, reading, and enjoying a cup of coffee, all while basking in the sunlight that filters through the glass.
Sun Princess introduces an innovative theater concept that breaks away from the traditional fixed-seating arrangement. Instead, the flexible space allows for various configurations. The audience can face the stage in the traditional manner, or the seating can be arranged in the round for cabaret-style shows. Another option is a bleacher-style setup, where the audience faces each other. Additionally, a keyhole-style arrangement allows the artists to interact with the audience.
Located on Deck 8 at the aft of the ship, the Wake View Terrace is a brand-new space that is exclusive to members of the Wake Club, or so it seems. However, this stunning area is actually open to all guests. It features an infinity pool that extends beyond the edge of the ship, terraced seating, comfortable loungers, and a bar.
Expect a ship with similar features and concepts when sister ship Star Princess sets sail in 2025.
